Binding and Bind Styles

Mechanical Binding

Last updated on 29 Jan, 2026

Mechanical binding (which includes spiral, wire, plastic comb, ring binders and in general any binding with holes in it and is held together through various mechanical methods) requires full bleeds on all 4 sides. Files should bleed at the back (gutter) .125" and there should be no crossover image from the previous page.  (PDF files will have to be created in Single page mode versus the normal facing or spread page mode in InDesign)

Because of the holes being drilled into the back gutter margin, the margin will need to be large enough to accommodate the drilling without losing type in the drill holes. Usually 11/16" is what is recommended for this back gutter margin. No type or important images should fall within the 11/16" back gutter margin.
