When to Use Spot Colors

Last updated on 07 Nov, 2025

  1. When your job is color critical, such as brand-standard colors used on a logo, a spot color is the best type of color to ensure it prints exactly as you expect.

  2. If your job involves fewer than four colors, it can often be more affordable to have it printed using spot colors.

  3. Metallic and fluorescent colors can be difficult for the CMYK process to replicate.

  4. If your design entails large area coverage of solids that must match from one piece to the next, using spot colors will ensure greater consistency.

  5. Use a solid (100%) spot color for very small type, the background of reversed type, or for fine lines. Using spot color tints for such designs could result in a jagged appearance.
